Radio Frequency (RF) has been used in medicine for over 30 years, for minimally invasive surgery. It is particularly suitable for aesthetic applications since the heat is treated by body cells as an energy source. In aesthetic applications it is applied to the skin via electrodes to heat the deep layers of the skin. Since fat cells are more resistant to high frequency (HF) electrical current than other skin cells, they heat up more quickly. This heating effect is useful in shrinking fat cells for body contouring.
